Chrissie I am recharging my Kindle with the USB code between my computer and the Kindle. I get the following message: If you want to read or shop on your Kindle while continuong to charge over USB, please keep the USB cable attached, but eject your Kindle from your computer.

I do want to read. I do not understand that which I have put in bold print! Could somebody explain this to me?

Aaron (scruffynerfer) | 142 comments If you are on windows. Go to my computer and there should be an icon called 'kindle' or something like that. Right click on it and press eject.

If you are on a mac. Then either press th eject button next to the 'kindle' icon or drag the icon to th recycle bin.

I am doing this from memory so what I have put might not be 100% correct but if you get any problems, then just let me know and I will be happy to help

stormhawk | 542 comments What they mean is to keep the Kindle plugged into the computer, you have to dismount it as a disc drive.

I guess that wasn't terribly helpful was it ... you know when you use a thumb drive you have to click on that little icon in the system tray to shut it down before you remove it from the computer so you don't damage the files? That's called ejecting. You're stopping activity on the device, but leaving the Kindle plugged in to the computer to keep charging through the USB cable. You'll know you've done it right because the message goes away from the Kindle screen and you'll see whatever page you last had active on the device or your screen saver.

I mainly charge mine up in a wall outlet. You don't even have to use the Kindle cord ... any micro-USB charger will work. I don't know if this is true or not, but the charge rate seems faster from a wall outlet than the computer. (I am a U.S. user do not know if the power cord information is the same in Europe).

Chrissie Thanks! I will go try.

Charging from a wall is faster than USB as it uses the full capacity of what the cable can take in terms of volts, whereas a computer is restricted to the USB port. Sorry if this is a bit more information than is needed lol

stormhawk | 542 comments I appreciate knowing that kind of stuff, but then I also referred to as "dismounting the drive."

My Kzin name is Speaker-to-Machines.

Clare K. R. (clare-dragonfly) I wondered about that too, Aaron, so thanks! I ought to remember to charge mine from the wall more often...

Chrissie Well my problem is solved. thanks for all your help. Plugging into the wall just seems easier. Also I am turning off the G3 when it isn't necessary. I freeked out when I was at the dentist and thought I would soon not be able to read my book.

I DO like knowing diffeent ways of solving the problem.

Another question. Do you ever clean the Kindle? Like , should you occasionaly wipe it with a damp cloth? Just an idea. I don't use a skin. At least I now know what a skin is!

Do NOT put a damp cloth or any water anywhere near your kindle. You'll risk damaging it and I don't think Amazon will replace it if it fries due to water damage. (Most companies won't) If you find that you do want to wipe it down, get some of the wet-wipe cloths that are designed to wipe down computer screens. Those have a limited amount of moisture on them and shouldn't damage the device.

Chrissie Raoph , thanks for the advice. My Kindle is new so I haven't manhandled it! Now I know what to do if it ever needs a little cleaning.

Don't get it in a condition where it needs cleaning. I use mine to read in the bath, in a ziplog sandwich bag made by Glad, size small, which I buy by the box for about four Euro at the supermarket. Mine gets a lot of handling, in and out of the ziploc baggies and the leather case, and I've never had to wipe it.

Here's the major tip: before you splash out on a fancy case, buy:
1. A really good screen protector.
2. A box of ziploc baggies to protect your Kindle from wet.
With a screen protector and a ziploc baggie, you can do whatever you like with your Kindle. I take mine on my bike in the summer to lie reading in a meadow -- I live in Ireland, where it rains, which is how come the island is green and beloved...
3. Whatever cover looks good to you or lights your political lamp.

The best screen protector I found is this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tuff-Luv-Enha...

The case I like, simply because I like leather cases and this one is very well made, is
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tuff-Luv-Trad...
I paid a quarter more for mine than it now costs. Not strictly necessary but nice to have.

Chrissie Andre, thank you. I don't have a screen protector, but I am using a ziplock baggie and I have a cover.... Thanks for the links.

Pat (pat_gee) | 14 comments I used the USB Port to charge, Then I plugged the Kindle into my computer to transfer a book from Kindle for the PC. I have the same message "If you want to read....while continuing to charge over USB, please keep the USB cable attached, but eject your Kindle from your computer."
My Kindle light is green--it is charged.
I'm stuck with this message.
Any advice?

stormhawk | 542 comments Go to the icon in your system tray that looks like a little thumb drive (you may have to click on the little left-arrow if you don't see it already). Click it. A window will pop up that says something about stopping the device.

click on any one of the devices listed, USB or drive letter whatever or Kindle to highlight it, then click stop.

Once the screensaver picture or your current book or main menu appears on the screen, you can disconnect the Kindle from your computer.

Karen B. (raggedy11) Mostly I recharge in the bedroom outlet. But one time I was here at the computer and instead of going through the USB port, I just plugged it in to the Surge Protector. (I was lucky I had an outlet that wasn't being used, but I could have unplugged my speakers or something like that temporarily)
